How it (sometimes) works...
We have set up a wireless router to serve our own needs, and found that it reaches Badanfhuarain Cottage and parts of the grounds too, but not Flox Cottage. If you are one of those unfortunate ones who simply must work on holiday, we sympathise, so please feel free to connect any time you like.
Any fairly recent laptop will have a wireless receiver built in, and should be able to connect to the net. I'm afraid we're not competent to offer help or advice on this, but all the info you should need is here.
Network type: Access point. Make sure your machine is set up to search for networks using access points
Address type: Assigned by DHCP. It doesn't use static addresses. If your setup shows something like 192.168.0.1 as your address, you'll need to change this so your address is assigned dynamically.
Passwords etc: None! There are no special codes, keys or passwords required to get on this network. This is to make it easy for everyone to connect, but be aware that the info you transmit could be monitored by any commercial competitor hiding in the forest.
Usage: We'd be grateful if you didn't use the connection for big downloads – we have a fairly tight usage limit to stick to. Also please don't plot coups and invasions with your comrades, or do anything else that'll get us into trouble. Other than that it's all yours.
Best places to sit: Well, it's not an exact science, so a bit of trial and error will come into it. Laptops seem to differ, and some do much better than others. The best room in the cottage seems to be the little lobby outside the kitchen door, but just use whatever works for you. Don't forget, we're not techies at all, so this is just a little bonus for those who can take advantage of it themselves.
