Forest Cottage |

Due to a cancellation we are offering 5 nights at 20% discount
starting on Monday 30th August

This late nineteenth century 'fairytale cottage',
full of local character, stands within spacious homestead grounds in a tranquil setting at the edge of a
peaceful forest village between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey.
The Dean family have made Badanfhuarain Forest Cottage continuously available for holidays over the past 30 years. Carefully
restored and up-graded in 1997, it is traditionally furnished and
continues to offer a high standard of comfort and 4-star quality with family-style hospitality.
"The view of Badanfhuarain Forest Cottage
with its honeysuckle round the gate, and the warm welcome of the Dean
family was worth our 7000 mile journey. Could there be a more idyllic
setting anywhere on earth?" Serena and Ted, Cape
Town
"We have had a fantastic
week. The disabled facilities at the cottage were the best we have ever
stayed in. This was our first visit to the Highlands and we couldn't
believe how beautiful it was." Paula, Mick, Jamie, Mark and Chris, Liverpool
Ideal for a
really peaceful holiday, this cottage
regularly attracts walkers, wildlife watchers and those who simply
enjoy tranquillity. South facing with its own fenced garden,
it shares six secluded acres of forest and maintained grounds with our own home, the tiny 'Lazy Duck' bunkhouse and four-pitch lightweight 'Cool Camping' area, and looks out across mown grass to a burn with ponds and ducks and through
pinewoods towards heather moors and the mountains. A number of traditional
features give this cottage its very distinctive character, including an
efficient open fire for logs and peat.
Badanfhuarain Forest Cottage is bright
and spacious inside, providing flexible family accommodation
for up to 5 people (+ cot) in 3 bedrooms, with linen
and towels provided as well as all the usual domestic supplies.
Electricity is charged for at cost
on meter readings, - no coins needed. There is central heating with storage and direct heaters, timers and thermostats. Space heating and hot water are provided all at low-tariff. |

|
|
The living room log
fire is a cosy winter alternative to the convenient focal-point
electric heater. There is satellite
TV with DVD player and a standard telephone landline with no coins needed. Free broadband operates within the cottage, however certain restrictions apply and reception will depend on your laptop. |
| The self
contained kitchen is spacious and well equipped,
including electric hob and oven, microwave, toaster, kettle,
dishwasher, fridge, freezer and washing machine with tumble drier. There
are ample surfaces and storage cupboards with all the usual cutlery,
crockery and utensils. |
|
|
There
are three bedrooms, including a double
bedroom (shown left) with a single
room leading directly off, - very popular
with younger children. |
| ...and a twin
room (right) which has a cosy curtained `box
bed`with its own light and little window offering an old-time
experience and a little extra privacy. All bed linen and towels are
provided and beds are made up for your arrival |
|
 |
By arrangement it may be possible to bring your dog. The cottage garden is well fenced and has direct access to beautiful walks from the gate. However our terms are fairly stringent and in particular a lead must be used at all times outside the gate in case of meeting with free-ranging waterfowl and possibly children. |
Free range eggs are often available
from our own hens, and sometimes organic vegetables from the gardens and the polytunnel.
If asked we can bake bread
for your breakfast table. |

A few pictures below to give a flavour
of the area around Nethy Bridge

|
Surrounded by broad mountain ranges, caledonian pine forests, farmlands, rivers
and lochs, Nethy Bridge lies in an area of magnificent
natural environments on a grand scale, all within the Cairngorms
National Park.
Meeting of rivers Nethy and Spey in early spring with the village in middle distance, Abernethy Forest and Cairngorm beyond. |
|
With open roads and easy access
to out-of-the-way places, this is a perfect base for touring
as well as for exploring off the beaten track.
It is a
favourite area for bird and wildlife watching, walking at all levels, participating in a wide variety of outdoor activities (see our local area page) or otherwise simply relaxing.
Loch Garten (3m) lies within the Abernethy RSPB reserve |
|
|
|
Having a central landward location
we can often experience excellent snow sport conditions either at CairnGorm Mountain with its funicular
railway or at the Lecht ski ground, both within 30 minutes drive.
Most winters we can ski tour from the door through the Abernethy
Forest.

We have low rainfall
for an upland area, few midges and comfortable summer temperatures
all of which make this area ideal for summer holidays. We are especially spoilt for choice in walking and cycling routes with many miles of forest tracks starting from the door.
The River Nethy flows from the Cairngorm Mountains through ancient woodlands to Nethy Bridge |
|
|
And in case you didn't know, late summer is
the season for collecting the forest berries
and edible mushrooms which, together with our red squirrels,
are some of this area's best kept secrets.
