Flox Cottage

Built in 1870, this original all-timber cottage has been carefully restored, furnished and equipped to provide a home from home for families or small groups. Situated just a few minutes walk from the centre of the village, Flox Cottage faces south within its own fenced garden opening directly into a network of woodland paths leading to the village golf course. Restored to highest modern standards, the cottage still benefits from its original heavy double timber roof, long since hidden under an outer cladding, making it cool and comfortable in summer and extra warm in winter.

The open-plan living room (right) with satellite TV incorporates the dining area and kitchen (below) and is spacious yet full of character. The original interior wall panellings of local Scots Pine, and the entirely wooden `hanging lum' (the suspended canopy formerly used over a peat fire but now housing a rather safer electric 'look-alike') help to create a unique atmosphere in this unusual cottage.

Kitchen facilities include electric cooker, microwave, dish-washer, fridge, freezer, toaster and kettle, as well as all crockery, cutlery and utensils. Utilities include telephone (no coins required), washing machine, tumble drier, airing/drying cupboard and covered storage for bikes, skis, push chairs etc. Full electric central heating is by integrated heat storage and direct appliances, with timers and thermostats. Heating units are priced at less than half the standard domestic rate, and electricity is charged for according to meter readings on entry and departure (no coins needed).

There is a generous double bedroom (right) with a single room adjoining and leading through to the bathroom (a convenient arrangement for young children). All bedrooms have enough space for a cot, and a folding bed can be made available by arrangement in the double room to provide for an extra child. All bed linen and towels are provided and beds made up for your arrival.

The secluded back garden provides turning space and close off-road parking for at least two cars, room for children to play and direct access to 100 acres of beautiful woodland paths..

From the front garden you can simply watch the world go by, whether from the south-facing porch with its stable door or from garden chairs set out on the grass in the shade of the big birch tree.

And the bird feeder attracts numerous visitors including the local red squirrels, seen from the windows of the cottage, and if you're lucky you'll spot the roe deer that live in the woods coming up to the back fence in the early mornings.
