Badanfhuarain Forest Cottage was fully renovated during the spring of 1997, and redesigned internally to accommodate wheelchair users.  Access to the cottage from close private parking on grass is via a level pavement through the garden.  Level entry at the front door is over a very small tapered threshold.  All doorways provide clear passing space of at least 75cms/29.5". There is turning space in all rooms and light switches, plug sockets and coat hooks are fitted at wheelchair-accessible heights.

The warm BATHROOM is spacious and has a roll-in 'wet-floor' shower corner (shown right) with fold-down seat, a wheeled shower chair also available, accessible shower controls and hand-set, a hand rail on L.H.S and lateral transfer space for a wheelchair user on the R.H.S. of the seat, not shown in picture. The toilet seat, designed for stability and support is standard height with raiser available, hand rail on L.H.S. and transfer space on R.H.S.

The wall-hung wash basin has good underspace and lever taps.

The floor is non-slip.

ALL BEDROOMS and bed spaces are wheelchair accessible, with transfer to all the single beds being to the left.  Beds are standard height and one of the single beds in the twin bedroom can be moved to give open space on both sides.  The mobile hoist can be used for access to any bed space, and the monkey-pole can be used for all except the bed in the curtained alcove in the twin bedroom.  The bed in the single room is only 76cms/2'6" wide to allow for a hoist or wheelchair turning space, but is full length, sturdy and has an adult's quality mattress.

THE SITTING ROOM  has comfortable seating with flexibility to give wheelchair positions as desired, and an extending dining table accommodating up to two wheelchair users.

THE KITCHEN layout is not fully adapted for an independent wheelchair use, however there are lever taps at the sink, which is also mounted at lower than standard height. The cooker hob controls are also fully accessible, and there is a drop-door oven below.

THE GARDEN is level and fully accessible to a wheelchair user, with access to a sheltered sitting-out area and to the lawn.

NB. There are two separated steps each of 11cms/4.5" at the back entrance to the cottage through a utility room making, this back door entrance not therefore suitable for a wheelchair.
